Developing Your Own Meditative Practice Around Tea

Turning tea time into a meditative practice is such a soothing and grounding experience, we decided to share a simple guide on how to do it at home.

1. Choose Your Tea

Start by choosing a tea you love. Herbal teas like chamomile, or green teas, often work well for meditation.

2. Create a Sacred Space
Find a quiet, cozy spot where you can escape from the hustle and bustle. Perhaps set up a small table or mat for your tea ritual. Enhance the ambiance with soft lighting, a candle, or some soothing music.

3. Prepare Your Tea Mindfully
Pay attention to every step of making your tea.

Feel the texture, see the colour, and breathe in the aroma of the leaves.

As you heat the water, listen to the sound and watch the steam rise. Let this be a time to slow down your breathing and center your thoughts.

Pour the hot water over the tea leaves with intention, and watch how the leaves unfurl and the water changes colour. Take a moment to appreciate this beautiful transformation in your teapot or cup.

4. Engage Your Senses
Hold the cup, feeling its warmth. Inhale the tea's aroma and try to identify the different notes. Take small sips, savouring the flavour and the sensation of the tea as it moves through your body.

5. Practice Gratitude
Reflect on the journey the tea took to reach your cup. Think of the people and elements involved in its creation.
Express gratitude for this peaceful, nourishing moment.

6. Silent Reflection
After finishing your tea, sit quietly for a few moments. Focus on your breath or the sensations in your body.
Observe your thoughts without judgement, allowing your mind to rest.

7. Set an Intention for the Day.
End your session by setting a positive intention for the rest of your day. Some examples may include statements like:

  • Today, I will approach challenges as opportunities to learn and grow
  • I will be patient with myself
  • I will acknowledge and appreciate the small joys throughout my day
  • Today I will express gratitude to someone who has positively impacted my life
  • I will practice deep listening and give my full attention to those I interact with”
  • I will be kind to myself and others in my thoughts, words, and actions
  • I will take one step forward towards my goals, no matter how small
  • I will practice self-compassion and forgive myself for any mistakes
  • I will find balance between work and rest, ensuring I take care of my well-being

As with most things, consistency is key. Aim to incorporate this type of meditation into your daily or weekly routine.
